Aside from the gentle sound of wind rippling across the grass and the dull shuffles of the occasional passerby, all was silent in Tao village. Given the late hour of the night, this was to be expected. For the alert sentret that had been surveying the area from a tree limb for hours, the overall peacefulness of Tao was new and welcome, though somewhat disconcerting at the same time.
Unbidden, a yawn escaped the cautious pokemon's mouth during a moment of mental laxity. Bad. Squeaks repositioned herself so that she was no longer slouching over, and attempted to blink away her sleepiness. An unalert sentret was a dead sentret. Predators thrived in the darkness of the night, and only those that were prepared got to survive to see the morning.
Yet…Tao appeared to break all of these natural laws. Prey and predator could commonly be seen exchanging pleasantries and helping one another out, here. No killing. No fear. It was like being in an entirely different world from the forest, despite the two places being so close.
Another yawn. Squeaks was having a lot of trouble focusing. This was to be expected, given how out of the ordinary her day had been. She had been chased by a hungry dog, caught by a dragon, and carried off by a gigantic bird who also intended to eat her… only to be rescued by the same dog that had started the whole chain of events.
The dog. She peered down towards the base of the tree, where the growlithe was dozing off contentedly. What a strange character he had turned out to be. First, he tried to eat her, then he turned around and promised that he would stay by her side and keep her safe. Perhaps it was just poor judgment, but Squeaks believed that his words were sincere, at least to the extent that he himself would not attempt to harm her himself. Her intuition had kept her alive for this long, so she would trust it here as well.
Suddenly feeling more drained than before, Squeaks finally conceded to the fact that sleep was imminent. If sleep was necessary, surely the tree branch she was in would be the safest place to rest. Yet, after several moments of lying down, she realized that something just didn't feel right.
Once again, she glanced down at the dozing growlithe. It had been a long time since Squeaks had been in the company of another, to the point that such times were scarcely memorable. Against her usual inclinations, Squeaks found herself climbing down the tree towards her new acquaintance. Soundlessly, she coiled herself around the growlithe, taking care to not disturb a single strand of fur on his body.
Despite her delicate movements, Squeaks' delicate ears picked up a shift in Hachiko's breathing patterns. He had woken up, but apparently chose not to react to the sentret that had joined him in close proximity on the ground. Perhaps, like Squeaks, he was simply grateful for the company.
Finally, the exhausted sentret started to drift off into slumber. After a few short hours, this place was already beginning to feel like home.
I'm so proud of the artwork for this! This is more of less my first honest attempt of doing any sort of background, and while I'm sure it could be much better I'm super happy with how it came out! (So...many...grass strokes...)
I'll proofread the story further tomorrow, as I'm too tired to do a decent job of fixing things right up now. My sentences are beginning to get less coherent at the moment xD. I just hope Squeaks is acceptably portrayed. She's not in love (and never will be) with Hachiko.
Anyways...feedback? Suggestions? I'm asking for this more for the art than the story, as I'm much more into drawing than writing. I'm proud of the final drawing, but I know there are still a ton of things I can improve on. ^__^
